A brief account of Suidae evolution

Suidae are a family of large mammals that comprises well known species such as wild boars and warthogs, as well as a heterogeneous array of other extant and extinct forms. They are capable of adapting fast to environmental fluctuations, evolving through changes in size and morphology. From a paleontological perspective these changes are of   remarkable value for biochronological applications and   paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Interesting aspects of Suidae biology that have implications for our understanding of their evolution are the retention of primitive anatomical features and a reproduction strategy that maximizes reproduction efficiency at the expense of a prolonged effort in parental care.
