Two countries, one seafloor: comparing the Devonian trilobite faunas of France and Portugal

The existence of diverse and numerous Portuguese Devonian trilobite assemblages has been known for 150 years, but they lack a comprehensive revision. Therefore, the researcher's PhD project aims to study in detail these trilobites, in order to reveal the existing paleobiodiversity and putative paleobiogeographical links. During the Devonian times, Portugal and France belonged to the same palaeogeographic realm, sharing biological communities. Thus, it is expectable that a great part of the trilobite fossil species recognized in France are the same that occur in Portugal.  Previous systematic work made by the researcher highlighted the need to compare the Portuguese specimens directly with the French material, since many French Devonian trilobites are only known from illustrations from the first half of the 20th century. This work is essential for rigorous taxonomic revision, avoiding the duplication of defined taxa and ensuring the validity of those taxa recognized as new. Furthermore, this study will also improve knowledge of the Devonian trilobites from France, especially that of particular groups (e.g., Calymenina), which have not been updated for over 70 years.
