Antarctica before dinosaurs: Triassic fossils from the bottom of the world

Lower Triassic fossils from Antarctica were among the earliest pieces of evidence to support the theory of plate tectonics.  Since their first discovery in 1967, nearly 1300 vertebrate fossils have been recovered from the Fremouw Formation and these remains suggest a well-developed ecosystem surviving at polar latitudes despite approximately 30 days of complete darkness each year. In this talk, I will share my experiences collecting fossils from Antarctica as well as highlights of the latest research on the fossil record of the icy continent.
